New pattern release... Elwick Cowl

Updated: Jan 24, 2023

It's been a busy few weeks at the ACD Shedquarters with getting back to teaching workshops at Kraft Work Yarns, additional crochet training and of course pattern writing.

I am very excited to release my new pattern to you!

Inspiration

The inspiration behind the design of this cowl came from several places all at the same time. The owner at my LYS wanted a simple pattern to add to kits that only used 50g of 4ply. That's not much to work with (about 200m)!

Then, my sister sent me some beautiful Biffsugar Yarns for my birthday, one of which was a gorgeous hand dyed skein of... you guessed 50g of 4ply.

The challenge was set!

When it comes to the changing weather in Autumn I start to feel the cold, and fast so I'm often wearing knitwear most of the time, even in the house. A cowl is perfect to wear all day without being too bulky, plus it is smart enough for work and doesn't need to be shifted or adjusted every 10minutes.

I wanted to maximise every inch of this simply gorgeous yarn (Vintage Mermaid colourway by the way), so wanted a fabric that had drape but held the warmth and didn't waste yarn.

I setted on this stitch pattern as it fits the bill perfectly, and shows of the delicate speckling wonderfully (who doesn't love a speckled yarn).

Ta dah! I hope you love it as much as I do.

Gift idea

This is a fairly quick make, and certainly a project that is portable simple to do whilst watching tv. You could make several as lovely gift ideas - if you find you have 'knitworthy' people in your life. The stitch pattern is not lacy so would work well in darker colours as a truly gender neutral piece.

Stash Dive

I also made a rainbow pride version that I managed to get out of only 48g of leftovers. This is a great stashbuster project. Alternatively, got some mini skeins you don’t know what to do with? Grab 3-5 (depending on if they are 10 or 20g) and fade them, alternate rows with them or simply colour block.

This is a fun make that is prime for using up oddments of 4ply yarn, have a riot of colour and don’t forget to share your makes using the hashtags #elwickcowl and #artisancrochetdesigns.

Enjoy your crochet!

Love Lyndsey x
